While planning the food for our little guy's 2nd birthday party, I knew simple and minimal day-of preparation was key. Mornings with an infant and toddler can be a little unpredictable so I wanted to prepare most everything in advance so I could celebrate the birthday boy.
The main dish I prepared is a toddler (and adult) favorite, sloppy joes. What pairs well with sloppy joes? Beans! I love Busch's baked beans any time of year but especially along side burgers and brats during grilling season. So it was decided to make sloppy joes and a homemade version of baked beans. I used a cowboy beans recipe from Plain Chicken found here. Both recipes I made the day prior to the party and warmed the sloppy joes in the crock pot and beans in the oven. Easy. The recipe called for two cans of great northern beans, but I used six because I tripled the recipe and I'm glad I did because there was hardly any left in the end!
Long story short, if you are thinking of serving baked beans for an evening bbq, consider making a homemade version with canned (or dry, if you plan ahead) great northern beans.
